Familytree Klootwijk

The project: an introduction

Are all Klootwyks desendants from the old branch "van der Merwede"?
Are all Klootwyks relatives?
Is there a connection between branch 2500 and branch 2939?
Conventional genealogical research may not supply all the answers, a lot of old documents are lost.

Bu there is another way! Some information can be found in the human Y-DNA.

Joined with the "van der Merwede" foundation we started the DNA-project to possibly get some answers.

What is Y-DNA research

DNA is an unique collection of genetic material. DNA is used in forensic research. (as in the TV-series CSI) Human DNA can be found in every cell of the body and is unique.
Each child get a random collection of DNA which is 50% from its father and 50% of its mother.

But there is one piece of DNS, the Y-chromosoma, which is a bit special. The Y-chromisoma is only found in the cells of male persons. This chromosoma is passed from father to son with mostly no alterations. So all male descendants of 1 branch have allmost the same Y-chromosoma.

With the project a genetic "fingerprint" will be made of all male participants. If two fingerprints are the same, the persons are relatives.

How to join?

If you are a male Klootwyk and you want to join, this is the procedure:
  • Enlist FamilyTreeDNA with the special link
  • Select a Y-DNA test, a 37 markers-test or more is preferred.
  • Enter paymentdata (creditcard).
  • After a few day you recieve your test-kit.
  • Collect your DNA material.
  • Return the test-kit.
  • Wait for the results.
The results will be collected by groupleader, George van der Merwede. You also recieve all results and and certificate.

What are the costs?

Unfortunately DNA research costs money. But the participants of the "van der Merwede group" get reduced price!. Depending on the test and the special discounts the prices vary. A good test (the 37-marker-test) costs at this moment (may 2013) $149.00 (reduced price valid with link above).

F.A.Q.

Is the test painfull?
No, you collect the DNA by yourself with a brushing the inside of your cheak.

Who is in charge of your DNA?
Your fully in charge of the material. The DNA will be stored by FTDNA but will be destroyed on request.

What do the know of me by researching the DNA?
Only DNA-parts that are redundant and have no function will be tested. So nobody gets information of the color of your eyes etc. The only information that can be concluded id that you are male. Otherwise you have no Y-chromosoma.

Who gets the money?
All the money is needed by the research facility FTDNA. The "van der Merwede" foundation and the Klootwijk-researchers do it all for free.

And if I have any questions?
Ask all your questions to George van der Merwede of the Merwede Foundation or to me.
